Paige KrugelPaige Krugel grew up in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, just ten minutes away from Lake Michigan. Her closeness to the lake instilled a deep appreciation for water resources and the Earth, often spending her time outdoors enjoying the beach. This early connection to the lake led her to pursue a higher education at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) in Fort Myers, Florida, where she initially majored in Marine Biology. However, her interests expanded as she learned more about inland ecosystems and ecology, sparking a deeper appreciation and prompting her to switch her major to Environmental Studies with a concentration in ecology and environmental assessment, and also minoring in biology.
During her time at FGCU, Paige has conducted independent research on the impacts of plastic pollution on marine environments and water resources. This research experience led her to branch her involvement to assisting university-led research in the Florida mangroves. Since March, Paige has been actively contributing to this research, and starting in August, she will begin her own professor-guided research project, funded by the university. Paige's commitment to environmental conservation extends beyond her academic pursuits. This summer, she will intern with Glacial Lakes Conservancy (GLC) at Willow Creek Preserve in Sheboygan. In this role, she will work alongside the GLC team on fieldwork activities such as invasive species removal and treatment, trail maintenance, tree cage upkeep and watering, and general management assistance of the preserve. This internship aligns greatly with her future career aspirations in conservation and sustainability, further ensuring the preservation of the planet for future generations. Outside of her environmental endeavors, Paige enjoys traveling, spending time at the beach, listening to music, and always enjoying an iced coffee. If you see her out at Willow Creek Preserve be sure to say hello! |
