The past calendar year brought an additional 90 acres of land under permanent protection by Glacial Lakes Conservancy. The conservation easement known as Marsh Haven is in the Milwaukee River watershed in Fond du Lac County. This easement is notable as GLC’s first partnership with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District through their Greenseams program. This brings the number conservation easements held by GLC to 29 and a total of 2139 acres protected.
GLC owns 5 preserves which all have updated land management plans. Our flagship preserve is Willow Creek Preserve (WCP) in the City of Sheboygan. In addition to native plantings and removal of invasive species, GLC is pursuing a stormwater project and water quality testing on this 143 acre preserve, as well as an archeological survey to learn about the Native Americans who formerly lived on this land. WCP and other preserves are open to the public for passive recreation. In addition to Executive Director Jennifer Rutten and Land Project Coordinator/Willow Creek Project Manager Isabel Mueller, GLC added half time Miriam Duero as an additional Land Project Coordinator. Staff, Board members and other volunteers have pursued conservation related education through on-line and in person learning. GLC celebrates what we have achieved in 2023 and we look forward to 2024 with confidence. We are grateful for the ongoing support of our members and donors. Cynthia Northup Board President |
