This property in the Onion River watershed and the Lake Michigan Basin contains prime farmland, orchards of heirloom varieties, and tributary surface waters that run through an environmental corridor that provides a vegetated buffer and water quality protections for the Onion River/Hingham Mill Pond in this Central Lake Michigan Coastal ecological landscape. A single family home and barn are situated along County Road F. With the growing development around the mill pond, this farmland is at risk for development pressure. The property falls north of the Onion River Grasslands, a DNR Land Legacy Place that has the potential for grassland and wetland restorations projects, as well as farmland preservation. Protection of this parcel fulfills many goals and objectives set forth by Sheboygan County’s Natural Areas and Critical Resources Plan, specifically to conserve the character of rural areas in the basin including natural areas, prime agricultural lands, and environmental corridors, improve water quality by encouraging best management practices in agricultural areas, and to sustain the County’s agricultural heritage and economy.
