GLC Internship

Introduction:
Glacial Lakes Conservancy, Inc. (GLC) is a private, non-profit land conservation organization. The Conservancy offers land conservation options, organizational support, and technical guidance to landowners and organizations in Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Kewaunee, Calumet and Fond du Lac counties. GLC currently stewards 304 acres across five properties: William F. Christel Woods and Wetlands Preserve, Grasshopper Hill Preserve, Charles & Winifred Spring West Twin River Preserve, and Willow Creek Preserve, and protects an additional 1,844 acres with 29 conservation easements throughout our five county service area.

Executive Director, Jennifer Rutten, Land Project Coordinator & Willow Creek Preserve Project Manager, Isabel Mueller, Land Project Coordinator, Miriam Headrick and a dedicated, all-volunteer Board of Directors, spearhead GLC’s land and water protection mission.



*Unlike our NRDA intern role, this position is not grant funded nor internally funded. Applicants applying understand that there is no compensation provided by GLC* 

  • Tasks may include using monitoring equipment, volunteer events, site monitoring, invasive species removal,  data management, design, photography, writing, general office work, and reporting. 
  • The Glacial Lakes Conservancy Internship is a varied role with many avenues for gaining experience. This role can be customized to any applicant looking for experience within the natural world and office. 
  • All roles listed below are things past interns have helped with in the past, when applying, applicants can express greatest interest and goals and GLCs staff will help to align the role for accepted applicants' desires.
Varied Roles:
  • Site monitoring and reporting
  • Habitat maintenance and restoration activities, including invasive species control
  • Site maintenance activities
  • Special projects as appropriate
  • Communicate with GLC staff on a regular basis
  • Record data in Google Drive, iNaturalist and ArcGIS, on a project-by-project basis
  • Predict resources needed to complete projects
  • Plan, promote, lead, and facilitate community engagements and volunteer stewardship activities on site, providing public access as needed. 
  • Maintain a project file on GLCs Google Drive that includes correspondence (email and other), meeting agendas and notes, contract documents, grant documents, project tracking and invoicing, and any other data or items applicable to the project.  
  • Assist in the design of GLCs website and brochure 
  • Assist in creation of event materials and social media posts 
  • Help staff organize and digitize official documents in house 
  • Assistance in reporting out to stakeholders 
  • Grant writing 
Schedule:
This position has a flexible schedule. Typically, this has been filled by students who had received grant funding which specified hours and goals. Some duties, particularly volunteer work parties or committee meetings, will take place on nights or weekends. This position is based on GLC properties, easements, and in GLC’s office, all of which are in GLCs five counties. 

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
This position seeks a university student looking to gain experience. Other requirements include the following:
  • Positive attitude and constructive problem solving skills
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and communicate clearly with staff and volunteers as needed 
  • Ability to maintain an awareness of site conditions and anticipate potential risks in the field
  • Ability to reliably make it to the Conservancy’s office at scheduled meeting times, with appropriate personal field clothing and gear for site visits
