Flood Conservation Easement County: Fond du Lac
Lot size: 2.54 Established: 12/28/2000 |
Property story
This corner lot property in the Lake Winnebago/East watershed is situated to the west of the Niagara Escarpment and the Kettle Moraine in the flat lands south of Lake Winnebago, just outside of the City of Fond du Lac, which is under mounting urban development pressures. As urbanization increases, the protected property will provide an oasis for wildlife habitat, open lands for water infiltration, and a scenic view of natural beauty for the public. In 1989, this area was designated a priority watershed under the Wisconsin Non-point Source Water Pollution Abatement Program. Lake Winnebago is a major glacial lake of the region and reducing threats to surface and subsurface water quality are top priorities for the basin. Since the purchase of this 4.5-acre parcel in 1982 (which has a house and accessory buildings on the western portion not covered under the Conservation Easement) the landowners have planted nearly all the trees on the property, converting it from a mowed lawn to a natural landscape. The management of this land with the end result of mixed plant species will help to meet the goals set forth in the Fond du Lac County Land and Water Resource Management Plan, 2001.
