Knowles-Nelson Stewarship Funding Program Update -
thank you to everyone who voiced your opinion!
thank you to everyone who voiced your opinion!
The Joint Finance Committee (JFC) voted on June 11, 2019 to adopt Governor Ever's position to extend the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program for two years at current funding levels (33 Million/year).
This funding source was originally established in 1989 and has been used to protect more than 500,000 acres of Wisconsin's most cherished land. Historically, the program has been reauthorized for 10 year intervals. Conservation projects take time, and sustainable funding sources are crucial for long-term planning and collaborative projects.
Although, we are disappointed at the short term renewal decision made by our legislature, we are proud of Wisconsin's conservation community for showing their bipartisan support for land and water protection. We are hopeful that at the end of the two year extension, a long-term conservation funding solution will be secured.
Wisconsin is an attractive place to live, work, and play. Residents and visitors alike chose Wisconsin for the beauty of our natural resources. This is evidenced by out $18 billion outdoor recreation and $24 billion forestry industry. We have a rich history of conservation and most of us have deeply ingrained memories of being outdoors with our families as children, and now we create memories with our own children, grandchildren, nieces, nephew, friends, and other loved ones.
"In the coming years, we must continue to ensure that Wisconsin’s Stewardship Program—one of our nation’s most successful conservation programs—remains strong and well-funded. If we do, it will continue to provide natural areas, state parks and bike trails that Wisconsinites will enjoy for generations to come." ~The Nature Conservancy

Snowshoeing is a great way to explore...
Snowshoeing is a great way to enjoy our regions landscapes this time of year. There are no limits to where you can go when creating your own path in a pair of snowshoes. It’s one activity that all skill levels and ages can participate in, making it a fun adventure for the entire family. All four of our owned properties (Christel Woods, Spring Preserve, Grasshopper Hill, and Willow Creek) and three of the public preserves that we hold conservation easements on (Bur Oak, Point Creek Natural Area, and Van der Brohe arboretum) are all wonderful places to discover this time of year in your snowshoes. Winter is also a great time to explore wetland areas that may not be easily accessible during the rest of the year. Get out there and have some fun!
