Property Story
The Van der Brohe Arboretum Annex Conservation Easement protects a diverse and ecologically important property located in the Township and City of Two Rivers within the East Twin River watershed of the Lake Michigan Basin. The Lake Michigan shoreline serves as a critical migratory corridor for birds and contributes to regional water quality.
The protected property includes wetlands, forested land, grassland, and hardwood bog, providing valuable open space and wildlife habitat. Plant species identified on the property include willow trees, asters, and bottle gentian. Wildlife observed on the site includes Great Horned Owl, Snowy Owl, Rusty Blackbird, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Bobolink, deer, snakes, and small mammals.
The property is owned by Karen Steingraber and John Durbrow, who are placing a conservation easement on the land prior to transferring it to the Van der Brohe Arboretum. Once transferred, the property will serve as an extension of the existing arboretum, which is already protected by a conservation easement.
By permanently protecting this land, the Van der Brohe Arboretum Annex Conservation Easement ensures the preservation of sensitive habitats while expanding opportunities for public engagement and connection to the natural landscape.
