Learn more about Turtle Spring Farm!
Turtle Springs Farm consists of 40 acres, located in the Town of Sherman, SW Sheboygan County, on an east facing recessional moraine that gives way to an outwash plain leading to the North Milwaukee River one mile to the SE. Ice push ridges on the property are indicative of a post glacial lake to the south that is now part of a 100-acre wetland in the North Milwaukee River watershed.
The land was settled in 1871 and farmed by the same family for the next 100 years. Subsequently, a series of owners used the land for horses and rented land to local farmers.
Jim and Patti Ellis, Owners/Stewards, acquired the land in 1993 and named it Turtle Springs Farm ~ inspired by the presence of numerous turtles and springs. With the help of a community of family and friends, they have transitioned it from a working farm to a nature preserve. They have planted approximately 4,500 trees and shrubs and 22 acres of prairie transforming farm fields into a nature sanctuary.
The efforts of the Turtle Springs Farm have paid off. The property provides rich and diverse habitat that provides for wildlife. Species documented on the property include Pileated and Redheaded Woodpeckers, Great Blue and Green Herons, American Kestrels, Bald Eagles, Norther Harriers, Barn and Screech Owls, Badgers, Flying Squirrels, Least Weasels, Monarch and Karner Blue Butterflies, Rusty-patched Bumble Bees as well as countless additional more species that are more common.
The property has two creeks ~ one, Turtle Creek, that crosses it and another, Dog Creek, that originates from natural springs. It also contains a calcareous fen and pond. The latter is a runoff pond created by damming Turtle Creek.
In the interest of preserving what they and the Turtle Springs Farm have created for future generations, Patti and Jim are working with Glacial Lakes to place a Conservation Easement on their property.
