Mark's passion for environmental preservation was ignited during a pivotal moment in his childhood. At the age of ten, while visiting his grandmother's home, he listened intently as his father and uncles reminisced about the Illinois River. They painted vivid pictures of a time when the river was abundant with shellfish and teeming with aquatic life. Curious and concerned, young Mark asked what had happened to the river. His relatives explained that in an effort to protect Lake Michigan from the city's mounting pollution, the course of the Chicago River was reversed, diverting the contaminated waters into the Illinois River. This decision had devastating consequences for the river's ecosystem, leaving Mark with a profound sense of sadness and disappointment. This formative experience instilled in him a lifelong commitment to restoring and preserving the natural world. |
